Post Secret: “I’m a Muslim and a lesbian. How do I fix it? I’ve tried to pray it away.”
Sunaina took off another wedding dress and was hesitating to try on another. It didn’t seem right for Sunaina to try on these clothes when she knew getting married right now wouldn’t cure her.
Her mother knocked on the door “How long does it take to choose a wedding dress? Or do you want to wear a wedding dress with just a hijab (head covering)?”
Sunaina answered “I don’t know what I want mother, I never even agreed to this wedding.”
Her mother walks into the dressing room in a fit of anger “How many times do I have to go over this with you? You don’t have a choice; this marriage with Aamir was finalized even before you wore born. Try this on, it’s purple and it will bring out the beauty of your skin tone.”
Sunaina’s mother hands her a purple wedding dress with a hijab attachment and Sunaina puts it on with anger and looks in the mirror, “This doesn’t even seem natural?” She decides this is the dress she shall get and Sunaina and her mother leave the store.
On the day of Sunaina’s engagement she meets her best friend Mina. Sunaina feels like she is losing the only thing worth living for. She holds Mina’s hand during the engagement ceremony, even when the ring is being put on, the ring feeling so alien on her ring finger. Later, when friends and family start to discuss the wedding plans Sunaina walks to her bedroom’s balcony where she meets Mina. She holds Mina’s hand, and she knows right now feels right, this physical touch feels so natural. Sunaina looks into Mina’s eyes and asks her “I’m a Muslim and a lesbian. How do I fix it? I’ve tried to pray it away.”
Mina smiles bitterly at Sunaina “It can’t be prayed away, it’s who we are love.”
The both look at each other as tears start to flow from Sunaina’s eyes, Mina wipes the tears away and both feeling the emotions share a kiss under the moonlight and they know this is the only moment that Sunaina will cherish for the rest of her life.
