Alone

Zada Spector waited for her name to be called. She tried to stare at the words written on her tiffany blue note card with her initials, Z.S, engraved in the corner. She tried not to look at the audience; however, she failed in her attempt and looked around the audience couple of times hoping they would be there.

Finally headmistress Prudence called her name. She walked to the podium with uttermost grace and delivered her essay on Manet and the execution of Maximilian. She spoke with confidence, something she had learned from her father at the earliest age. She also spoke with passion, something she picked up from her mother.

Zada encountered a familiar face at the end of the night. “Uncle Mike!” She smiled at him holding her glass trophy.

“And here comes the star of the night.” Mike said as she wrapped her arms around his waist.

“When did you get here?” Zada asked looking up.

“Like 3 hours ago. I was standing in the corner over there.”

“Can we go home? “ Zada asked quickly before he could speak further.

Mike smiled at the nine year old girl and nodded his head.

In the car Mike handed her a box and a card. This one was from her dad. The note was to apologize, and the present to congratulate her. She took out the butterfly pendant encrusted with tiny blue and lavender shade diamonds. She smiled and took out her phone to send a quick think you to Donna, her Father’s assistant. Donna messaged her back pretending to not know what it was about.

Zada found her second note and second present on her bed after she got home. This one was a leather bound diary. She smiled at the note.

“I am sure you kicked ass today. If you did not win the essay competition then please don’t tell your father. He will probably sue all the judges on the panel. I am so sorry baby for not being able to make it today. I am giving you this so you can write how horrible I am today. I surely deserve it for missing out. I will make it up to you when I return.”

“She left it for you this morning.” Maria said as she placed her hand affectionately on Zada’s back. “Don’t be mad Miss Zada. She is trying you know.”

Zada smiled at the older housekeeper. She was not mad at her mom. She wasn’t even mad at her dad. She just wished they had been there. Ever since her parents decided to part ways, both of them have pulled out from her life, and she was sort of left all alone.

That night when Zada took to her bed she grabbed her new leather bound diary. She wrote about her new found loneliness.

Birthday

Zada woke up on her tenth birthday and beamed at the sight of her mom sleeping beside her. She turned slowly to face her and watched her sleep. She shifted closer to her mom. Zada had missed her terribly.
Zada’s movement caused Roshni to wake up from her sleep. Zada immediately regretted it. “I am sorry” She whispered.

Roshni rubbed her eyes and looked at her with a hint of surprise. “For what?”

“For waking you up,” Zada murmured in a low Voice.

Roshni laughed. “No baby. I feel asleep by mistake.” She got up from and pulled Zada on to her lap. “I missed you so much.” Roshni said as she pressed her cheek against Zada’s.

“I missed you too.”

“I have something for you.”

“What is it” Zada asked excitedly.

“It’s not here. I will give it to you later.” Roshni placed a light kiss on top of Zada’s messy hair. She affectionately combed through the mess using her finger. “For now that will just have to do.”

Before Zada could respond Maria came in running. “Ms. Roshni, he is burning everything. I am afraid if you don’t help he will burn down the whole kitchen. Then we would have to order take out food. Take out food is not good for Miss Zada.” Maria said in her thick Spanish accent.

Both Zada and Roshni stared at her, then broke into laughter.

Chocolates

Zada popped a chocolate truffle in her mouth and continued write on her diary. Today was what she called a bad day. She was sure even her mom would agree. There was no need to practice moderation on chocolate tonight. She took another one of the chocolate truffles she made with her mom on her Birthday. So that’s what aunt KC did every day, no wonder she was so happy. Zada wondered if she should change her dream of being a lawyer like her dad, and instead open a gourmet chocolate shop. Zada sighed. The ten years old girl wondered why life had to be so complicated.

  1. You just made me tear up for that wonderful little girl! I loved these. They are so touching and explain so much yet leave the desire to learn so much more about their characters. I want the back stories... on what caused them to separate and such!!!
