I threw a wish in the well, Don't ask me, I'll never tell, I looked to you as it fell, and now you're in my way - Carly Rae Jepsen

Seung Hyun did not know what happened, but all correspondence from the cake girl had stopped. He was back to burnt toast and street bagels again and it made him miserable. He wondered if it was his words that had upset the girl. He was harsh in criticism but he had always had something positive to say. The girl was an excellent baker. However, Seung Hyun felt if he did not put her cakes down then she would stop trying, in other words she would stop sending them to him for his approval, or his grandmothers to be exact. May be he shouldn’t have been so harsh. He shouldn’t have said rude things like even the cake stand looked prettier than the cake. He had the urge to go find the girl. He probably would have given it more thought if it was not for selling the bakery. The sooner it is sold, the sooner he could move on.

"What are we doing here?" Seung Hyun asked after the waitress with the really friendly nature left. Barun hated this place. According to him they truly did not know what was a rare steak, and what was a medium steak. Last time he got into an argument with the chef on this subject. Afterwards he was so angry he almost ruined this restaurant through bad peer reviews.

"What do you mean?" Barun asked looking through the menu. "It's your favorite place."

"And your favorite place is two blocks away, so I am wondering why a selfish bastard like you would decide to treat me by bringing me here today?" Seung Hyun grinned. "Ah..you want something. What do you want?"

Barun put the menu down on the table. "I am obviously hurt that you think I am not emotionally capable of doing something nice without having an ulterior motive. But okay fine. I just wanted to let you know I will buy the bakery from you."

Seung Hyun blinked before responding. "You can't."

Barun looked at him incredulously "What does that mean?" Barun asked in disbelief. "Don't tell me you already found someone. I will double their offer, doesn't matter what is. You will make even a bigger profit."

"Everything is not about profit. I just don't think you will be able to run it."

"I run a multimillion dollar law firm, I think I can handle a bakery."

Seung Hyun shook his head and picked up his menu. "This is exactly why you can't run a bakery."

Barun ran everything like a business, and judged everything through profits. That's how he picked his cases, his colleagues, and even his friends. Seung Hyun wanted someone with a different mindset for the bakery.

"What do I need to do to convince you?" Barun asked as bribing him with food was not working.

"Nothing I just won't give it to you. You don’t have what it takes to run a bakery.” Seung Hyun said plainly as he picked up the menu.

“What do I need to run a bakery?”

“Well beside a lot of time in hand, I would say a heart maybe.”

Barun snorted at his comment. The waitress had returned and they dropped the conversation. The bakery was a business, and you don’t need a heart to run a business, you need a brain.

KC sat on balcony leaning against the glass door. She had only managed to write couple of sentences after hours of thinking. What do you write to a person who deceived you? After couple of sleepless nights, last week KC had decided she did not want revenge. It was so undignified. That did not sit well with her other two friends who were ready to have some fun on her behalf. They tried to change her mind during Naina’s doctor visit.

“What do you mean you are taking the moral high ground?” Jouty asked in disbelief as she stared at the monitor. “He is so tiny” She squealed.

“You think so because I swear it feels like he weighs a ton.” Naina said lying on the bed staring at the monitor. This was her 11th ultrasound appointment. She just liked looking at her baby. “Are you sure we can’t set up one of these at home?” Naina asked the doctor.

“Yes I am sure.” She responded.

“Are you absolutely certain?” Jouty asked the doctor.

The doctor nodded.

“That sucks.” Jouty sulked. “It would’ve been nice if we could look at the baby more often.”

Naina nodded. She tore her gaze away from the monitor and looked up at KC. “What do you mean you are taking the moral high ground? Such things should only apply to people with high morals.”

“I decided not to do anything childish. He mislead me, it is shameful for him. I am just going to be the bigger person and let him go.” KC said crossing her arms.

“I am sorry he did not mislead you. He lied to you, and took advantage of you, and made you look foolish. You can’t let him go.” Jouty reminded her once again.

And that’s how she gave in again, well a little. Although the two girls were dying to get their hands on this guy and teach him a serious lesson, KC had told them if she was going to stoop low to do this then it was going to be exactly her way. She will only do what he did to her, and this will not last long. It has been two weeks since then. KC groaned in agitation and looked out the window. She finally decided to scribble down some words for the greedy guy who has been eating her cakes for weeks while deceiving her. This was going to be the end of this.

After many weeks someone rang his bell at the ungodly hour and ruined Seung Hyun’s sleep. This time around he was surprisingly excited. He hurried to the door and there it was. The same young boy with the same package .He signed quickly and placed the box on the table. He untied the perfect bow on top of the box and lifted the lid. There was no cake, simply an empty cake stand with a note.

This time there was no dear, or anything of that sort. No long letter of appreciation. It only had few words.

I baked you so many cakes. It’s unfortunate they were never good enough to please you. I believe it’s only appropriate that I stop sending them to you. Here is a pretty cake stand, hope that pleases you.

Seung Hyun looked at the back of the note, searching for more words. There was nothing. The girl he thought was polite and respectful had just disrespected him.

“That’s it?” Seung Hyun asked out loud? He looked at the box with the cake stand. She sent him a cake stand with no cake. This was ridiculous. It was insulting. Somewhere in the city she was sitting around and enjoying this.

An hour later Seung Hyun found himself standing in front of her penthouse in SoHo with the box in hand. Seung Hyun rang the bell. Obviously this girl wasn’t baking out of dire need he thought. In her letter she had made it seem like baking was lifeline. So what Seung Hyun might have said some harsh words toward her hobby. That was not a reason to mock him. Seung Hyun rang the bell again impatiently.

A beautiful dark haired girl in glasses opened the door. It wasn’t till she fully opened the door he saw her huge belly. Seung Hyun silently hoped it wasn’t her. Who wants to hurt a pregnant lady’s feeling? Even he wasn’t that mean.

“You don’t have a pregnant belly fetish, do you?” Naina asked the handsome stranger. He hadn’t said a word since she opened the door, and he seemed really intimidated by her belly. She did not know if she was amused or offended. Maybe a bit of both.

“Fetish? No” Seung Hyun said straightening his shoulder. “I am looking for someone.”

“Who are you looking for?” Naina asked leaning on the door.

“Is KC here?” Seung Hyun asked clearing his throat.

“What’s in the box?” Naina asked eyeing the box.

“It’s a present she sent me. I would like to return it to her if you would call her.” Seung Hyun said impatiently. The girl asked a lot of questions.

Naina raised a brow at the stranger. “Why are you returning a present? Don’t you know that is rude?”

Seung Hyun muttered some curse words silently. “Can I just meet her so I can move on with my day and you can move on with yours? It is starting to feel like an interrogation.” He looked past the girl into the living room. The girl was starting to make him sweat. Even men his size could not do that.

Naina crossed her arms and let them rest on her belly. “If you tell me what’s in the box I will let you in.” She watched his expression change as he thought about it.

He took few moments to reply. “Fine.” This woman was a monster he thought. The baker lived with a monster. “It’s a cake stand.”

Naina’s eyes widened. He must’ve noticed because his expression changed. “Have a seat. I will go get her.”

Naina let him in and closed the door. She couldn’t believe her luck. They prey came to her door himself.

“She is sleeping. I will go wake her up.” Naina smiled and walked away.

Seung Hyun nodded and looked around.

“Wake up!” Naina said digging through a dozen pillows and pulling the cover off Jouty.

“I went to sleep late last night” Jouty mumbled and turned to face the other way, away from Naina.

“There is a guy looking for KC.” Naina said excitedly.

“So?” Jouty said sighing in frustration. “Tell him she is not home at this hour. She is volunteering at a children’s club. She will be back in…”

“It’s her cake guy” Naina interrupted.

Jouty’s eyes opened in her half dazed state. “What are you saying?” She sat up immediately.

“He is here. In the living room, looking for her.” Naina said sitting at the edge of her bed.

“He is here? Why?” Jouty asked. Suddenly awake.

“Well apparently KC sent him a cake stand?” Naina said grinning.

“A cake stand? That’s it?” Jouty frowned. That’s all the punishment the jerk gets?”

“Well I was thinking, it doesn’t have to be that way you know.” Naina smirked. “He is right here, and KC is not coming home till later”

Jouty got out of her bed. “Give me two seconds. We are going to have so much fun with this!” Jouty squeaked as she ran to the bathroom to freshen up.

Ten minutes had passed and the girl did not return. He was starting to get a bad vibe from this. He told himself he was just bored in an unfamiliar place. There were some magazines neatly stacked on the plush ottoman. He went through them one by one trying to find something to read while waiting. Vogue, Marie Claire, Elle, Harper’s Bazaar, Vogue Italy, Vogue Korea, Vogue India, Glamour, Allure, Vogue France, Fine Cooking, Bon Appetit, Vogue U.K, Elle Italy and Elle France. There was nothing he could read or would ever read unless his life depended on it. Probably not even then. He wondered why any household would need so many Vogues. This house was an example of consumerism at its worse, second worse considering Barun still walked the earth. May be he should tell her to stop spending so much on these useless magazines and enroll in pastry classes. That would be a good insult. His thoughts were interrupted when two girls appeared.

The first one was still smirking. The second one was studying him head to toe. Somehow he did not expect her to look like that. He has expected someone different, someone softer. Someone with loose long waves maybe, pale rosy cheeks, definitely had not imagined someone with a tight ponytail.

Naina nudged Jouty forward.

“You are KC?” Seung Hyun asked to be sure.

Jouty searched for words at the back of her head. Yes? Yeah? Aye? Aha? Si? Nothing came out.

“Do you see anyone else here?” Naina asked before it became any weirder from Jouty’s silence.

Seung Hyun let out a breath and handed her the box. He still could not see her write all those letters and baking cakes. He wondered why she was so dressed up. Did she bake like this?

Jouty and Naina opened the box and quickly glanced at the note.

“I just wanted to return your cake stand to you. Also I wanted to let you know you cakes weren’t that bad. My comm..I mean my grandmothers comments were meant to help you.” Seung Hyun said in a stern manner. “It was hard for me, for us to believe that you would be so rude instead of thanking us for our criticism. If you feel any remorse I would suggest you apologize to my grandmother and send her a nice apology treat.”

Naina and Jouty stared at the guy in disbelief.

Naina gritted her teeth and murmured in a low voice so only Jouty could hear. “This guy must have no shame at all.”

Jouty nodded.

Naina smiled big and looked up at him. “You know what! We would like to apologize. It was my idea actually. I saw how demotivated she was due to those criticisms. She would cry at night, and not bake in the morning. And I am sort of addicted to her baked goodies. Without those my hormones went all nuts and I asked her to do this.”

Seung Hyun and Jouty looked at Naina questioningly.

“Here, how about you sit right here and we will bake you a treat. And you can take it to your grandmother!”

Naina said directing him to the leather sofa again.

“You are going to bake?” Seung Hyun asked as the pregnant girl pushed him towards the sofa.

“Well no. KC will bake, I will just assist her. But wait right here. Feel free to turn on the tv.”

Naina hurried back to Jouty’s side and dragged her into the kitchen.

“What do you mean KC is going bake? KC is not here. And even she was she is not going to bake for that cake cheat again” Jouty hissed.

“You are KC for now remember?” Naina threw her hands in the air. “And beside we want to punish him right?”

Jouty nodded.

“Then we will bake him a wonderful cake, our way.” Naina said smirking.

Jouty laughed. “We are horrible!” She said shaking her head. “KC will kill us if she finds out.”

“Who says she has to find out?” Naina asked. “Let’s get to baking now! This is going to be such a fabulous day!”

In another part of the city KC was having a terrible day.

“What are we going to do?” Martha asked. “Sending them a nice letter and those documents obviously did not work. I told you we should’ve hired a Lawyer right away. Now it’s too late.” She handed her the letter. “They sent a person too.” Then she broke into tears.

KC quickly wiped her hands on the kitchen apron then took the letter. She looked up at the 57 year old woman, and felt like telling her it wasn’t her fault. It’s just that right now it didn’t matter whose fault it was. “I will handle it.”

KC walked to the man standing in the Basketball court watching the little kids play.

“Excuse me?” KC said, when he didn’t turn around she cleared her throat and said it louder while lightly tapping on his shoulder. “Excuse me?!”

Barun turned around instantly and his eyes fell on her hands. There was flour on her hand. If she got anything on his new suit he will make this process much harder. Barun noted her apron also had flour stains. Her hair was put up in a loose bun and her cheeks were flushed.

“They sent a kitchen cook to talk to me?” Barun asked narrowing his eyes at her.

KC ignored his rude comment and obnoxious attitude. She did not want to talk to him. “Let’s cut to the chase. You want this place sold and we want to keep it. How many days do we have to fight this?”

“You can’t fight it” Barun said letting out a laugh. He was ready to make the cook cry when he first saw her, and it seemed like she came with her claws out

KC looked at him sternly. “I didn’t ask you if you thought I could fight this or not. I asked how many do we have left to fight this.”

The girl was nuts, Barun thought. “You obviously don’t know who I am, you can’t fight it.”

KC let out a sound that sounded half way between a laugh and a cry. “I’ve never met someone so arrogant that they would actually say something like this out loud. What are you? A lawyer? Closed couple of big cases, worked for the biggest firm? May be even own a firm?” KC crossed her arms and shrugged her shoulders. “All assholes like you have the same model, there is no variety or uniqueness.”

Barun took his sunglasses off and stared at the girl.

“Now if you feel I have done my job by insulting you, can you please give me some factual answers? ” KC asked taking a step closer. She wondered where she was getting this sudden strength from. She rarely stood up to people.

Barun took a few seconds to gather his thought. This kitchen, or probably a cafeteria cook had managed to put him down and place him in the same category as every other “asshole” in the city. It was probably the most insulting comment Barun ever got.

He stared down at her. “You have 4 weeks. Do whatever you have to in those 4 weeks. Your lease ends in a month. After that the owner can sell it whoever he wants, and at the moment that happens to be my client. No judge or jury would argue this. So again, you can’t fight this.” Barun paused and shot her one of his confident smiles that scared his opponents in to making million dollar mistakes. “I think it’s time you find another kitchen to cook in.”

KC didn’t feel like correcting the arrogant bastard that she was not a cook, she simply liked to bake for the children. She took a step back and somehow managed a smile. “I will see you in 4 weeks then.”

Barun watched the girl walk back to the building. He snorted looking around the basketball court. The whole place was ready to crumble down, how did these kids even play with so many cracks on the court? He could win a case like this even in his sleep. He was not worried he reminded himself.
