"You want to sell the place?" Barun asked Seung Hyun, as if he missed the last 3 minutes of his explanation. "Why?"
Seung Hyun‘s brow furrowed. "What do you mean why? I just told you. Grandma is gone to who knows where and I am here left with a closed shop." He explained in irritation.
"Look" Barun dropped his silver fork on his plate and then pulled his chair closer to the table "The Upper East side will be a bad place without her cakes. I mean what will birthdays be like? What about graduations. And Weddings? You can't ruin people's weddings! You take away your grandmother‘s beautiful cake shop from here we will all have to go to those faux French shops." Barun stated his case passionately. He was sure if he was half as passionate in the courtroom he would have a 100 percent winning rate. Not that his 94 percent was anywhere near bad.
Seung Hyun rolled his eyes. "Oh how pathetic. Take it as a gift, you could do without those weekly calories. And I doubt people will stop getting married because they can't get their hands on my grandmother's cake." Seung Hyun got up and poured himself another cup of the perfectly brewed coffee.
"I won't marry. I will not get married unless there is a cake from your grandmother's shop at my wedding."
Seung Hyun carefully swallowed his coffee so he won't choke as he burst into laughter. "Oh thank god."
"Do you not have any shame? You are insulting me while drinking my new coffee. Do you know how hard it is to smuggle that stuff into America, even smuggling drugs would be easier."
"This was smuggled?" Seung Hyun did not know why he was shocked.
"Of course!" Barun narrowed his eyes at this ridiculous question. "Smuggled in from Italy just last week."
Seung Hyun just shook his head. Barun always wanted things that were banned in some form or another. The first time he realized this was when only banned books made Barun's reading list the summer they turned 14. The next time he saw it when Barun only wanted to watch banned films, next came going to underground seminars of banned speakers, in college it was banned musicians and bands or at least banned in certain countries. Finally as an adult he got interested in banned products, mainly food products, sometimes weird things like art pieces sold in black market. Seung Hyun often wanted to argue with him that the stuff available on a regular market was just as good as the banned materials, however he can not disagree with these delicious coffee beans. He had stopped disagreeing once he learned his grandmother also used to smuggle in hundreds of products for her bakery in many illegal ways to America. Figs from Istanbul, Rum from Jamaica, Truffles from France, fruits from Sri Lanka the list only went on.
"Are you sure you are a lawyer and not a criminal?" Seung Hyun asked jokingly.
"Lawyer, criminal, it's all the same. Just a matter of perspective." He paused. "Back to Serendipity now, you can't sell it. As your Lawyer I am advising you not to."
"Thank you for your.. ill advise. I am still selling it." Seung Hyun folded his arms over his broad chest.
"Okay" he paused, "as your friend I am asking you not."
"I am still selling it man. That thing won't let me sleep at night" Or in the morning he thought thinking about the recent letters and packages he has been receiving.
"Then take some sleeping pills.“ Barun said throwing up his arms in the air. I recently acquired this all natural drink from Brazil, knocks you out immediately. I will order you a box. Still I won't let you sell it." Barun said confidently.
Seung Hyun laughed. "I have never seen you act so desperate. It's breaking my heart." Seung Hyun placed his hand on his heart as he made fun of his friend. "Seriously, you have no say in this, it's mine."
Barun shook his head. "You forget 25% of it is mine, and I am your closer. You can't do any deal without me" Barun smirked as he reminded him.
Seung Hyun had forgotten Barun's investment in the shop. "Fine I will buy your 25% and I will find another lawyer to close my deal."
"I don't believe you." Barun told him cocking an eye brow. "You are bluffing."
Seung Hyun got up from his chair shrugging. "You shall know tomorrow," he said grinning. “By the way can I have some of these coffee beans?”
KC walked into the apartment early morning. She has been sneaking out for weeks. Not that there was any reason for her to sneak out, but her new hobby was not something she was proud of. She would've liked to keep it a secret till something came out of it, except now everyone would know.
"And where were you this morning?" Naina asked KC as she saw her enter. She laughed as she swung her hips slowly to the music one more time. It was getting harder by the day.
"I had to go drop of my cake somewhere." KC stated plainly and walked into the kitchen.
"Is this a new job? For past 2 weeks you have been baking late at night, and you have been leaving way too early in the morning, most places don't even open that early in the morning."
KC pursed her lips. She didn't want to tell anyone because she was sort of embarrassed of what she has been doing, she was edging on desperation. She walked over to Naina and slumped beside her on the sofa. She let out an audible sigh, "well actually I have been sending my cakes to a person."
Naina muted the music on tv and sat down on the sofa. "Is the person sick?"
It was a safe assumption on Naina's part. KC has been volunteering at dozens of shelters and safe homes ever since she lost her job and anytime a kid gets sick, a scratch, or even a little paper cut KC decides to bake the kid a special cake.
"No..." KC took a few second to word her thought. "You know how people send in their resumes? Well I have been sending my cakes instead." KC said under one breath. She waited for Naina to respond. "Do you think that's stupid?"
"No!" Naina smiled. "To be honest I think that's brilliant!" Naina paused. "No one can resist your cakes."
"Actually the person has been pretty resistant so far." KC said sadly.
"The person probably has a palette like a cow's backside" Naina assured her.
KC frowned and laughed at the same time. She appreciated that Naina had such a confidence in her work, but felt bad she was using such words to describe her mentor.
KC got up from the sofa, "You want breakfast?"
"I already had breakfast, but sure I don't mind a second breakfast." Naina said lightly tapping her stomach. "What I really want is some tea..."
KC laughed from the kitchen. "Only two more months, then you can have all the tea you want."
Naina watched KC prepare her breakfast. "So where did you send your cake resume to?"
"To SeoHyun sshi" KC answered as she prepared the batter for her pancakes.
"In Korea?" Naina asked looking confused.
"No..here." KC responded tilting her head in slight confusion.
"SeoHyun is not here though, she went to Korea months ago." Naina was sure of it.
KC placed the spoon in the bowl and walked to the livingroom. "What are you talking about?"
"My old landlady owns the apartment SeoHyun sshi lived in. Last time I went to pick up my.." Naina paused trying not to think about her old place, "my stuff..she told me. You should've seen her, dying to spill out the secret to someone."
KC shook her head in disbelief. It made no sense. "So who has been responding to my letters if she is not there? Her Ghost?!" KC was genuinely hurt. She has never baked the way she baked in last one week, she felt betrayed, she felt foolish knowing it all meant nothing.
"You sent letters too?" Naina asked. "well maybe the ghost liked your cake so much she has been responding."
"But maybe she came back? You said it yourself this was months ago." KC said, choosing to remain hopeful.
Naina shrugged her shoulder. "Maybe..I am sorry."
"No it's not your fault." KC's mouth compressed into a straight line. She thought against it, but she couldn't resist, "do you think maybe you can ask her?" KC immediately felt bad for asking. Naina had done her best to leave her old life behind, she didn't need her nosy landlady back in her life again to pester her with dozen questions.
"Sure!" Naina answered with much enthusiasm.
KC narrowed her eyes. "Are you..sure?"
"Yeah!" Naina made an attempt to get up from the sofa, she groaned. "Two more months" She reminded herself. "If I don't find out who is responding to your letters I will go mad thinking about it. Beside if it's not her I will have some ass-kicking to do." Naina flashed her a smile.
KC burst into giggles. "I would hug you really tightly right now if your huge belly wasn't blocking my way."
Naina nodded. "Two months! Now help me get up."
Roshni turned down the volume, no one needed to see the trailers before the movie. "So what happened?" She asked grabbing a handful of popcorn from the bowl.
"It's her grandson!! All these days I poured my heart out thinking I was talking to my role model and I find out it wasn't even her. He must've laughed at me every morning!" KC was outraged. This was her 3rd time telling the story today and with each turn she feels more angry and more upset.
"Wow, seriously?" Roshni was still trying to process the information.
"I say we sue him for impersonating another person." Jouty said casually. When everyone looked at her she shrugged her shoulder. "That's what I would do at least." She turned her head back to the tv. "It wasn't nice" She stated softly.
"Okay genius. You can't sue people because they weren't nice" Naina reminded her. "I say we mess around with him. He made you look foolish, now it's your turn to make him look foolish."
"I am not sure this is the right thing to do." Salma said biting her lips. Whenever she was with them she seemed to have moral dilemmas. "I mean we can just confront him..that would be the smart thing to do." Salma's voice got softer as she ended her sentence.
"Yeah hun. But let's look at it this way would that be just to KC?" Jouty asked passionately "Would that be fair?" She paused to make her speech more dramatic.
Roshni grabbed more popcorn, she knew this was just the beginning.
"Would that make her feel less embarrassed? heal her wounds? Walking up to him and reprimanding him would not be just to her." Jouty looked Salma straight in the eyes, as the young girl burst into laughter.
"Okay, okay! Fine!" Salma raised her hands in the air. "I give in. We should get back at this guy."
Both Naina and Jouty cheered in unison.
"Aren't we forgetting something? This is her personal matters, why are we waging a war?"
Jouty frowned and crossed her arms. "because when you hurt one of us, you hurt all of us."
"Why are you so quiet?" Naina asked KC, who seemed to be lost in her own thoughts.
"I think you guys are right." She turned to face all the other girls. "I am so tired of people taking advantage of my good side. I think it's time we take care of this guy."
Naina was impressed. She was all for goodness but sometimes people just needed to be a little at time, and this was KC's time. "Are you sure about this? Once this start you can NOT go back." Naina warned her.
KC bit her lip as she took a second to give it one more thought. "I want him to feel foolish."
"You can't feel bad halfway, if this does work you can't feel guilty." Naina warned her. She almost wanted to take back her plan. KC wasn't the type to hurt people, not even for pay back.
Both Roshni and Salma urged her to think about it one more time.
"Yes!" KC reassured her again.
Jouty clapped her hands together "It's decided!! We will start after the movie." She turned toward the tv and frowned. "I missed all the trailers. Let's start over"

LMAO... OOO now if only we lived together i have a list of people I need to get back t :P. On the whole this chapter was good. Dialogue was witty funny and emotions were perfect. I think I might sound like and old tape recorder now... but next time try and think about the description of where the characters are for example naina and KC in the lounge or tv room... give it a picture so that when someone reads it they can imagine the layout of the room. But I really love the banter and conversation. Already I can see specific characters standing out in each character. Well done Thank you and I eagerly await the next update.
ReplyDeleteDamn why must I be pregnant? Oh wait, I'm Junsu's baby mama. NVM. I want to have triplets. I'm in the sudden mood for cake!! I agree with Baji on setting and such.. other than that u got my personality down correctly ;)
ReplyDeleteThanks guys. I will remember those next time.
ReplyDeleteJunsu's baby mama I am waiting for you to have that baby so I can start your story.
WOW!!! ROFL you know I love your writing Fatima Jaan and this just proves why!
ReplyDeleteOh man, if we lived together the things we would get upto -shakes head thinking about it- No one would be able to live in peace!
There is no going back once you cross that line. Naina is right and people really need to stop taking advantage of people and I can go on and on :p
