This was the first time she had acknowledged the accident since it happened. Somehow looking into his eyes she felt she could have faced it. Even the nightmares were becoming more frequent. Thinking about it now she wasn’t so sure. He had come in and made her want to go back to the way things—the way she was before the incident. She couldn’t go back not after witnessing what happened. It had left her shaken to the core. She couldn’t go back to how she was before. She had seen too much.
She didn’t even know how she had been able to function everyday--how she was still functioning. It had gotten better. Well not really better but at least every little noise didn’t make her jump. The guilt, terror and panic she had it all pushed back into her mind to just survive. She had survived it before. She had thought she had gotten away from that when she had moved out at the age of 16. She had lived with violence for the first 16 years of life then gotten away. It had made her who she was today. Six months ago it had gotten back at her more viciously than before. It wasn’t physical but emotional. Physical she knew how to deal with but emotional—it had left her a wreck.
She knew she wasn’t responsible in her mind. Her heart just wouldn’t let it go. The guilt would have killed her if she had not gotten busy. So she had asked for the vacancy at this bakery. It had gotten her busy. She chose this because it would keep her busy learning everything.
Maybe it was just survivor’s guilt. She was the only one who had made it alive. She didn’t know how but no one else had including her support. Her best friend was gone. That was the worse. The nightmares left her struggling for air. All she could ever see was the face of the robbers, guns and fire. All she could hear were the gunshots. Fifty people and she was the only one who had survived. She probably wouldn’t have been if she hadn’t fallen behind the desk.
The constant fear had made her lose confidence in herself. It had taken her two months to get out of her apartment. It had taken her almost the next four months to even work in this bakery. Those four months were riddle with suspicion and being scared of everyone. Finally she was able to work properly and get her life back together. Now he had just waltzed in and reminded her of what she had given up-no not given up but took a break from. Maybe it was time for her to go back.
He was the only one who hadn’t lied to her so far. He was the type who knew what they wanted and power rolled off of him in waves. He would have to seeing as how he had expanded Mirage Enterprise. Everyone she had known or strangers had lied to her but he hadn’t. It had irked her so much when people just plastered on lie after lie even though the intention was to protect her. She would have preferred the truth. So he knew about her past. These thoughts plagued her throughout the whole night until he walked into the bakery the next day.
Yusuke was dressed in a white shirt and a grey suit with black boots. The bakery was usually empty during the time he came. He took his break for coffee and donuts either before 12 p.m. or after 2 p.m. avoiding the lunch hour rush. It could also be that he was his own boss and the owner of his own company and could take a break whenever he wanted. Roshni brought him his coffee and favourite donuts. She sat down across from him wanting to ask what he knew about the incident. She had tried to find information about him last night. It had been quite surprising when she found no information relating to his personal life. Everything was business related.
Before she could ask, another customer walked in. She was the only employee around. She went to the counter and took the order. She was bringing the order to the customer who had sat down on the table behind Yusuke. As she was about to put the chocolate cake down and the coffee the customer stood up surprising her. The tray flew out of her hand and everything fell on Yusuke.
“Yamamoto-san. gomennasai hontoni gomen.” Roshni said shocked. “Shit.” Yusuke ignored her apology thinking about the meeting he had in an hour…it was with Mirage’s board members and the other 5 percent shareholders. He couldn’t even go home and change as it would take longer than an hour. Thank God he had taken off his coat and only his shirt was ruined.
Roshni put her hand on his arm to get his attention. “I live like 5 blocks away. Wait a few minutes. My shift ends in like five minutes. Let me just clean this and give them their order.” Fifteen minutes later, they were both standing in front of a two-story house. Roshni walked to the side of the house and took the stairs up to her apartment. She opened the door to reveal a small room with closets and shoe rack to one side.
“I am coming in.” Yusuke followed Roshni in and was surprised to see the apartment done in a pale ice blue color. The living room had a small table in center surrounded with fluffy cushions. There was an armchair and a sofa to one side. Behind the sofa there was a small shelf filled with books. Across from the sofa and armchair was a 4 drawer unit with a medium sized TV on it. He noticed that there were no pictures displayed anywhere. He thought that girls would love pictures and display them everywhere. Maybe he was wrong. Straight ahead was the dining room. The kitchen was connected to the dining room. To the other side of the living room he could see two bedrooms. The apartment had a very inviting comforting presence. Roshni disappeared into one of the rooms as Yusuke was surveying the apartment.

wow... it brings some insight into rosh's character... I loved this part especially the description... you are getting better... well done... I loved it and cant wait to read more
ReplyDeleteI love how you describe the setting and everything. So much suspense with Rosh's character.. why the guilt? who is this best friend she lost? Loved it, it was well-written. Is Roshni detached from relationships and her past, is that why there are no photos?
