Chapter 1

Yusuke decided that this was one of his favourite places in the world. He liked the cosy atmosphere and the sweet aroma that surrounded this little bakery. It was located only twenty minutes away from his office. It was relaxing, just what he needed after looking over all the reports. He felt he could spend the whole day there. He liked the five people that worked there. At least they didn’t gawk when he walked in. It was rarely empty. There were always one or two customers present. He liked his small table in the corner.

He started to look over the reports one more time trying to figure out what was wrong. He knew there was definitely something wrong but what? He knew they were making profit but where was the profit going? It certainly wasn’t going in the reports. He knew there should be more profit reported than what was written down in the books.

He sighed in frustration. A plate of donuts and a slice of freshly baked strawberry cake were placed on his table by a hand. He chose to ignore them.

“You look like you could use a break.”

“I can but I don’t have the time to.” He said without looking up.

“Maybe once you eat something, you’ll be able to think better.” She said matter-of-factly.

“Don’t you have some work to do?” He asked irritated at her interruption of his work.

“Nope. I am on lunch break.” He could hear the smile in her voice.

He finally looked up from those unrevealing frustrating reports to see whom he had been speaking to.

Her nametag read Arai Roshni. She was pleasant to look at. He wouldn’t call her beautiful but she wasn’t ugly either. Her hair was tied back in a ponytail, which accentuated her strong cheekbones. Her eyes gave him pause. There was a sparkle of laughter, innocence, intelligence and naiveté.

He could feel his muscles aching and stood up to stretch his muscles. She wasn’t short only a few inches shorter than him. That would put her at 5 feet 3 inches at most.

He finally looked around to see that they were the only ones at the bakery besides the kid managing the counter.

“Why am I being treated to such a wonderful looking cake and my favourite donuts by a stranger?” He asked.

“I don’t think I am a stranger to you. I’ve been serving your food, drinks, and snacks for the past two months. You look like you could use it.” She answered softly.

He narrowed his eyes at her. “There’s got to be more than that.”

“Fine, you’re a regular here and I need someone to test my creations and not lie to me.” She sighed.

“What makes you think I won’t lie to you?” he asked curious.

She was surprised at herself. She didn’t think she had the courage to do what she was doing right now. When she said nothing for a few minutes, he picked up the cake and took the first bite.

She was watching him closely for his reaction. She noticed his eyes the most. That was what drew her to him. They were hypnotizing. She remembered the first time he had walked into the bakery.

He had stopped just inside the door looking haggard and took a deep breath. All the fatigue, tension and irritation just seemed to melt off of him. The he looked up and his eyes caught hers for a few seconds before they moved onto the cake selection they had for the day. There was anticipation for the snack that he seemed to need and resigned acceptance of everyone knowing who he was.

How can anyone not know who he was? He was Yusuke Yamamoto; owner of Mirage. He was only twenty-two yet had bought it when he was nineteen and brought it to new heights. Their headquarters were located twenty minutes away towering above almost everything.

He was 5 feet 9 inches from what she could tell. He was dressed in an impeccable grey suit. His black hair framed his face and she wondered if it was as soft as it looked.

He walked up to the counter and waited for her to make a big fuss. She saw the surprise on his face when she calmly asked if he knew what he wanted to order. The surprise was gone in a matter of seconds. He was waiting by the counter when a few high school girls entered and started squealing at the sight of him. She was surprised to him cringe at every giggle and squeal.
He pretended not to notice them rather than welcoming the attention.

His order was finally ready and she pointed him towards the table in the corner near the counter where he was hidden partially from view giving him some privacy.

She came out of her thoughts and noticed him finishing the slice of cake.

“You’re Yamamoto-san. Brutal criticism and destroying is your forte --- and you won’t lie to me.” She finally replied to his earlier question.

“I won’t lie because I am Yusuke Yamamoto?” He asked in confusion.

“Your eyes are honest.” She simply replied.
